Why Is Rep. Luis Gutierrez Suddenly Retiring?

Is there a story about political corruption or a sex scandal about to blow wide open? Nothing makes sense with his "retirement."

THE WASHINGTON TIMES reports:

One of the leading advocates for illegal immigrants will announce Tuesday that he is retiring from Congress, according to a report in Politico.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Illinois Democrat, will not run for the seat he has held since 1993, the website reported, citing “three Democratic sources with knowledge of the decision.”

Gutierrez spokesman Douglas Rivlin told Politico on Monday evening that “I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything.”

According to Politico’s Democratic sources, former Chicago mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, alderman for Chicago’s 35th Ward, already have sent signals that they would be interested in the seat.

Mr. Gutierrez would be the latest high-profile lawmaker to announce that he will not run in 2018, but most of the previous ones have been Republicans. The party that holds the White House, meaning Republicans in 2018, usually loses seats in off-year elections and often many incumbents retire rather than face defeat or difficult races or have to serve in the minority.

Mr. Gutierrez’s sudden retirement does not fit that pattern.
