WATCH: What happened in this classroom is EXACTLY why I quit teaching and went back Afghanistan
When I retired from the Army I taught high school for a year in Deerfield Beach, Florida. I went in with all the idealistic visions of making a difference, and for some that did happen. However, after one year I decided to volunteer as a civilian/military adviser to the Afghan National Army. I realized that being a high school teacher resembled being in a combat zone, and if that were the case I needed to be able to protect myself. The final straw was when I was heading to the track for practice — I was the track coach — and there were five young black boys beating down one. They had him on the ground and were kicking him in the head and body. I charged them and several ran away, except for one. That one decided to take a swing at me, and instincts kicked in from combatives training. The fella soon found himself in a front chokehold, and I remember him saying to me that he couldn’t breathe. That episode came to mind as I read this story.
