Mom gets prison for son’s ‘senseless’ death from strep throat
EW YORK POST – NATALIE MUSUMECI
A Canadian mom has been sentenced to three years in prison after her 7-year-old son, who was suffering from a severe strep throat infection, died because she failed to take the boy to the doctor, according to reports.
Tamara Lovett, 48, of Calgary was found guilty in January of criminal negligence causing death in the passing of her son, Ryan, CBC News reported.
Ryan “died an excruciating, unnecessary death,” Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Kristine Eidsvik said before handing down the sentence, according to the news outlet.
Eidsvik added that Lovett’s “actions resulted in the senseless death of an innocent child who needed her protection.”
The justice noted that Lovett was not to blame for Ryan getting sick, but claimed that “her failure to bring him to a medical doctor caused his death,” the Peterborough Examiner reported.
When Ryan developed the strep infection that left him bedridden in 2013, Lovett tried to treat him using home remedies of dandelion tea and oil of oregano for 10 days before he died, the court had heard.
