Flash Flood Emergency Declared, Black River Levee Fails In Arkansas

The Black River levee has failed in Pocahontas, prompting a flash flood warning for Southeastern Randolph County and Central Lawrence County through tomorrow.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Memphis issued the warning at 8:31 a.m. Wednesday which is in effect until 6:45 a.m. Thursday. NWS Memphis says an emergency manager reported the levee failure at 8:28 a.m. Wednesday.

The warning area includes Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Hoxie, Black Rock, College City, Portia, O'kean, Powhatan, Giles Spur, Shannon, Dicus, Fender, Elnora, Manson and Lesterville.

"Flood waters are moving down the Black River," the NWS alert stated. "Move to higher ground now. This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order."
