The truck was eventually found wrecked and abandoned in a nearby canal by law enforcement.  The officers came to Oritz’s home and found him unconscious in the back yard.  He was taken to the hospital, but never regained consciousness.

Placed on life support at the McAllen Medical Center, Oviedo was removed from the apparatus two weeks after the incident on Feb 15. On Friday, February 24, Oviedo succumbed to his injuries and passed away. He was 56.

A GoFundMe account set up to help pay his medical expenses said he served inthe Navy for year years, from 1981 to 1990, in the VA72 Bluehawks Squadron out of Jacksonville, Florida.  He also served in the US Naval Reserves from 1990 to 1996.

Ortiz was arrested 10 days after the incident and charged with aggravated robbery. Due to Oviedo’s passing, charges are expected to be upgraded to capital homicide.
