Trans Activists Decry Officials For Using Oakland Fire Victims’ Legal Names & Genders
In the wake of the Oakland warehouse fire that killed 36 concert-goers last week, a number of trans activists are calling out journalists and police officers for referring to victims by their legal names and genders.
@Oakland please delete this tweet as it continues to spread the wrong name and gender for feral pines (j. fritz). so disrespectful.

@HannahRJParry Please change your Daily Mail piece so it doesn’t give the deadname and incorrect gender for an Oakland Fire victim

Eliza Wicks-Frank is one such activist who describes the act as “alien” and “infuriating.”
Wicks-Frank, who reportedly uses gender-neutral pronouns, says “the impact that this lack of dignity and awareness has on the community of trans people who are alive right now is it tells them that their fight is irrelevant, that they’re going to be disrespected regardless of how they fight to live their lives.”
Another activist, Scout Wolfcave, says it is “deeply hurtful” when authorities use “he” in reference to victims who identify as female despite having not updated their legal documents to reflect that.
