Horseshoes are traditionally associated with good luck. A horseshoe-sized hunk of gold is even luckier.

An explorer in Australia, who wished to remain anonymous, turned up what he thought at first was “rubbish … maybe an old horseshoe,” only to discover that the large lump he had found about a foot below the surface was a 9-pound hunk of gold worth $190,000.

The prospector, who had been looking for buried treasure in his spare time for about 10 years, discovered that Victoria’s Golden Triangle was aptly named: Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that he had also found a 9-ounce nugget the day before, using his trusty $7,600 Minelab metal detector.

Persistence and an independent spirit paid off for him; his big discovery occurred in an area that supposedly had already been “worked over” and promised no more joy for anyone.

But joy there was, and “Friday’s Joy,” as the new find was called, was quickly tucked away in a bank vault, awaiting sale at auction.

The prospector said he will share the proceeds with a group of friends with whom he did his treasure-hunting. He plans to use his own share to purchase a van for traveling around his native land.

Friday’s Joy, hefty as it is, still fell well short of the record weight for such a find. The Discovery Channel reported that “Welcome Stranger,” discovered in Victoria in 1869, weighed in at 158 pounds.

Could our prospector top that?  After going from nine ounces to nine pounds in 24 hours, maybe he should stick around one more day and go for nine tons.
