New video of 'Yeti' at ski resort sparks Internet debate

FORMIGALES, Spain — The image of a hulking, shaggy-white figure on the slopes of a Spanish ski resort has renewed questions about the legendary Yeti's existence.

A group of skiers allegedly spotted the mythical creature at the Aramon Fomigal-Panticosa ski resort in Formigales, Spain. One member of the group anonymously posted two photos of the mysterious figure on a popular website at the end of January. On Saturday, they shared a short, shaky video of the encounter on YouTube.

"The shaky footage clearly shows something ape-like making its way through the snow-covered mountains," the video's description reads. "Skiers have been told to stay calm after video of an 'alleged yeti sighting' went viral."

The ski resort, for its part, posted a message on its Facebook page Thursday saying that it thoroughly examined the area where the sighting took place after interviewing the witnesses. Resort officials said they couldn't find any evidence of a furry beast passing through the trees and ensured skiers that their slopes are safe.

However, that didn't stop people from speculating about what the humanoid figure really is. The video and images were picked up by news outlets around the world. Most people appear to be divided into two camps, either believing that this Yeti is the real deal or that it is a practical joke.

CNET writer Amanda Kooser offered another possible explanation.

"The Formigal-Panticosa ski resort hosts a celebration where skiers arrive in elaborate costumes in early February," she wrote. "Images from the celebration on the resort's Facebook page show people in full-body cow costumes, tick costumes and wolf costumes. Perhaps the 'Yeti' was someone getting into the celebratory cosplay spirit a few days early."

While researchers might not ever obtain the conclusive evidence necessary to either validate or disprove the existence of legendary creatures like the Yeti, it can be entertaining to debate the topic in the meantime. A 2015 viral video purporting to show Bigfoot in Yellowstone National Park has garnered more than 1 million views so far. In 2012, a camper took a video of what he claimed to be Bigfoot in Provo Canyon.
