Handwritten notes from Air Force One show Bush response to 9/11
Handwritten notes from a Bush administration official released before the 15th anniversary of 9/11 give an inside look into how the President responded in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
The scribbled writings of Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary at the time, show worries about other attacks after George W. Bush was told about the hijackings while at a Florida school.
“Sounds like we have a minor war going on here. I heard about the Pentagon,” Bush told Vice President Dick Cheney at 9:45 a.m., according to six pages of notes Fleischer released to Yahoo News and Reuters.
“We’re at war,” the President told leaders of congress.
Fleischer’s notes show Bush reacting angrily to the attacks at one point the day, saying at 12:40, “I can’t wait to find out who did it. It’s going to take a while + we’re not going 2 have a little slap on the wrist crap.”
