In the days of yore, rulers used to celebrate major events or holidays by showing mercy upon minor criminals and setting them free.

President Barack Obama did something like that on the Monday before his State of the Union address, releasing a prisoner he apparently thought was innocuous — a Guantanamo detainee who had said he would try to kill Americans again if he were to ever be released.

According to Breitbart, Muhammad Abd Al Rahman Awn Al-Shumrani was released by the Pentagon on Monday. Al-Shamran, an Al Qaeda recruiter, may also have served as Osama bin Laden’s bodyguards.

His confidential file, which was leaked, called Al-Shumrani a “high risk” detainee.

“If released without rehabilitation, close supervision, and means to successfully reintegrate into his society as a law-abiding citizen, it is assessed detainee would immediately seek out prior associates and reengage in hostilities and extremist support activities at home and abroad,” the report said.
