Are You A Deplorable? Wear It As A Badge Of Honor
When Hillary Clinton was preening her moral superiority in front of a room full of campaign donors by calling Donald Trump backers “deplorables,” it was the kind of put-down liberals love.
It was arrogant, self-righteous and hectoring, smug and self-satisfied all at once.
But in the 10 days since she made that indelible mark on the race in what has proven to be a watershed moment, we’ve seen a backlash that’s crazy even in a crazy campaign season. Trump supporters packing arena after arena have claimed the word as a mark of pride – and a rallying cry Hillary is going to be regretting, because the Trump crowd won’t let it die.
The “deplorables” theme has been showing up in news accounts from Trump appearances since Hillary launched her attack.
At an Asheville, North Carolina, rally, one supporter carried a sign reading “deplorable lives matter,” according to the Washington Post.
In Miami, the candidate himself took the stage to the song “Can You Hear the People Sing” from the musical “Les Miserables” in front of a digital banner reading “Les Deplorables,” according to Politico.
