President Barack Obama is probably panicking now that the news has come out about an illegal immigrant who murdered a young girl who benefited from the president’s immigration policies.
The illegal immigrant charged with killing 21-year-old Sarah Root apparently entered the United States as an “unaccompanied minor” three years ago. Obama has said such children were not a threat. He was dead wrong.
Edwin Mejia, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, is still at large and on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s most wanted list as a result of the drunk street racing death of Root.
ICE Director Sarah Saldana wrote a letter to Republican Sen. Ben Sasse in response to a series of question from the senator in regardto Mejia’s case, according to Breitbart. What it said was astounding.
Mejia entered the country illegally in 2013 but was granted special treatment afforded to all detained unaccompanied minors from non-contiguous countries (i.e., not Canada or Mexico).
He was released into the U.S. and never deported. In a portion from the letter, Saldana stated:
“In May 2013, Edwin Mejia was encountered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) near Nogales, Arizona, after entering the United States without inspection. At the time of this encounter, Mr. Mejia was 16 years old and determined to be an unaccompanied child. Shortly after the initiation of removal proceedings against him with the issuance of a Notice to Appear, he was transferred to Department of Health and Human Services; Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), as required by law. Mr. Mejia had no recorded criminal history in the United States at this time.”
So in accordance with the law, Mejia was released to his brother who was living in Tennessee, from where they later relocated to Omaha, Nebraska. He was scheduled for a further immigration interview on April 19, but in January Mejia was involved in the Root’s death and fled.
The incident occurred when Omaha police arrested Mejia after he crashed into Root’s vehicle. He was allegedly street racing while drunk. The crash killed Root, and in a horrible turn of events, ICE did not file a detainer against Mejia because his crimes “did not meet ICE’s enforcement priorities.”
Sasse was not happy with ICE’s response and took the matter to the Department of Homeland Security, stating:
“ICE’s response does not attempt to answer why it did not detain an illegal alien who killed an innocent woman and is now on the run as one of ICE’s most wanted. Director Saldana’s handling of this matter shows no regard for the Root family and continues to be an embarrassment to the hard-working men and women at the Department of Homeland Security.”
Sasse is on top of this and will fight for justice, but this all could have been prevented if Obama hadn’t allowed illegal immigrants to remain in the country without penalty in the first place.
