Today: Despite Local Outrage and Protests, Obama Travels to Roseburg to Push Gun Control
Thousands of protesters are set to demonstrate against Barack Obama’s visit to Roseburg, Oregon today, with one of the organizers accusing the President of “using cowardly murderers to achieve your goals.”
Immediately after the Umpqua Community College shooting last week, Obama vowed to “politicize” the issue in order to push for more gun control laws via executive order, a turn of phrase that drew criticism, including from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who labeled Obama’s remarks “obscene”.
Although Obama’s visit today will primarily be centered around meeting with family members, a large crowd of protesters is expected to gather, including a number of armed open carry advocates.
According to protest organizer Kit Lange, who runs the Facebook page ‘Defend Roseburg – Deny Barack Obama’, the main grievance shared by the demonstrators is Obama’s propensity to exploit tragedies for political points scoring.
“No more using tragedy as a play to take more liberty. No more using grieving families as a pit stop on the way to another fundraiser. No more using cowardly murderers to achieve your goals. Not one more step towards taking our means to self-defense, our means to refuse slavery,” wrote Lange.
“We stand for the right of Americans to defend themselves, for the right of those families who did not want to be part of Obama’s gun control agenda. We stand peacefully and with principle to defend the people of Roseburg, and all Americans.”
