The stories behind first two have been recounted at length. The history of the third has finally been unearthed.

As “The Donald” marches forward in his quest to become president, the Washington Post delved into the past of billionaire Donald Trump to unearth the ancestry of a nickname as unique as the man to whom it refers.

The first public references to Trump as “The Donald” came from ex-wife and Ivana Trump in a 1989 interview with Spy, a magazine that made Trump-baiting into an art form. The iconic nickname was the result of adventures in a language not her own, the former Mrs. Trump told the Washington Post.
