If You Were Thinking About Eating Burger King’s Halloween Black Buns… READ THIS FIRST
Fast food restaurants are always chasing the next gimmicky food item in an effort to lure patrons back again and again. Sometimes they come up with holiday-related items that temporarily boost sales.
This year, Burger King wins the award for the strangest offering with the new “HA. 1. LOWEEN Whopper,” which is no different from a regular Whopper except that the bun is black because of added A-1 steak sauce, which is supposed to boost its flavor. The cheese on the burger is also black.
Someone at the Burger King corporate kitchen left out one important detail that lit the social media world on fire: Apparently, eating the bun causes one’s excrement to turn green. And not a subtle green — it has been repeatedly described as a bright “cartoon leprechaun green.”
Since proof of the bun’s byproduct was posted on Twitter (yuck — don’t worry, we’ll spare you that), the Internet world has taken it upon itself to solve the mystery as to why this phenomenon is happening.
Some argued it was the A-1 steak sauce, but others claim it was the green food coloring typically used in the food industry to dye food items black, like the dark black bun of the whopper.
Burger King hasn’t issued a response to the news yet, but the list of ingredients included in the bun is now public. Gizmodo reported that the black bun includes Yellow #6, Red #40, Caramel Color, and Blue #1 food coloring.
Blue #1 dye, also known as “brilliant blue,” is notorious for not being absorbed by the intestines, so it often appears in waste, except it’s green because it’s often mixed with tartrazine, a yellow food dye.
Yellow plus blue makes green. It’s plausible. Still, other sources say the green stool comes from the blue food dye mixing with bile, which turns waste green.
But really, the bottom line (sorry) is that we’ve warned you. Should you consume one of these Whoppers, don’t be surprised at the end (sorry again) result.
Doesn’t Burger King have a duty to inform its customers about what’s going on here? Something definitely doesn’t smell right about this.
OK, we’re done.
