The Battle of Iwo Jima was a pivotal battle in World War II when U.S. Marines won the bloody, weeks-long assault to capture the strategically key spot in the Pacific island archipelago. Almost 6,000 Marines and Navy corpsmen died and 17,000 were wounded.

The battle is considered one of the most important battles in Marines history.Military.com reports the 32nd Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones, once said:

The valor and sacrifice of the Marines and Sailors who fought on Iwo Jima is, today and forever, the standard by which we judge what we are and what we might become.
