CRUSADE: Wow, Look Who Just Declared “Holy War” on ISIS… This Is Unheard of in Modern Times
While President Barack Obama prevaricates on fighting Islamic extremism, won’t even utter the words “radical Islamic terrorism” and seems to embrace Islam at the expense of Christianity, one nation is standing strong against the global jihad.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has deployed forces in Syria to prop up embattled dictator Bashar al-Assad against the Islamic State and other jihadist groups seeking to topple him, has seemingly positioned himself as something of a “defender of Christianity.”
In fact, and certainly with Putin’s blessing, the resurgent post-Soviet-era Russian Orthodox Church has proclaimed that it is embroiled in a “holy war” against radical Islamic extremism, not just in Syria, but anywhere it rears its ugly head.
According to Islam expert Raymond Ibrahim, the head of the church’s Public Affairs Department, Vsevolod Chaplin, recently said, “The fight with terrorism is a holy battle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world fighting it.”
“The Russian Federation has made a responsible decision on the use of armed forces to defend the people of Syria from the sorrows caused by the arbitrariness of terrorists. Christians are suffering in the region with the kidnapping of clerics and the destruction of churches. Muslims are suffering no less,” Chaplin added.
This is actually not a new concern for the Russian Orthodox Church, which has been warning for years about both the secular and Islamic persecution of Christians.
Early in 2012, a church leader named Metropolitan Illarion described for Putin just what Christians were going through, and urged him to take action.
Illarion said that every five minutes a Christian was dying because of their faith in some part of the world, most specifically places like Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan and India.
He then asked Putin to make the persecution of Christians a priority of his foreign policy, to which Putin reportedly replied, “This is how it will be, have no doubt.”
Furthermore, Russian Patriarch Kirill even wrote a letter to President Obama a couple of years ago, urging him to stop supporting those who are slaughtering Christians.
Kirill wrote, “I am deeply convinced that the countries which belong to the Christian civilization bear a special responsibility for the fate of Christians in the Middle East.” But seeing as Obama has declared that America is “no longer a Christian nation,” is it any wonder he ignored Kirill’s plea?
Of course, many will dismiss Putin’s stance as a “defender of Christianity” as little more than political posturing, not trusting him due to his history in the KGB of the atheistic communist Soviet Union.
However, whatever Putin’s motives may be, at least he is doing something to defend Christianity and the Church, which is far more than can be said about Obama and the vast majority of Western leaders in Europe.
